These legendary hubs gears have been around for a long time and are still likely to be with us for many years to come, despite other internal hub gear systems being developed. Given the fact that Sturmey Archer have manufactured over 100 million hubs in their long history, it’s safe to say there’s a few of them around! Although they have a deserved reputation for lasting for decades, these hubs, like any hub gears, do need some maintenance from time to time.
Our course (the next one runs on Saturday, September the 9th, from 10am) covers a little of the history and theory of operation of Sturmey’s most popular three-speed hub, the AW, in both its original guise, and the updated No-Intermediate-Gear version, before getting hands-on stripping down, cleaning, and reassembling them.
